Families come in many forms. This #KinshipCareWeek, I’m celebrating the grandparents, siblings, aunts, uncles, family members, and friends who step up to raise children when their parents can’t.
More than 141,000 children across England and Wales are supported by kinship carers. I’m proud to stand with kinship families in Bristol East, and recognise the vital contribution they make every day.

Labour Party Conference already seems like a long time ago, not least because the Tory and Green Party conferences are now making their own headlines.
But looking back to last Tuesday in Liverpool, the final point the Prime Minister came to in his conference speech was perhaps the biggest and most contentious: Europe.
It was incredibly refreshing to hear our leader recognise what we all know: that Brexit has been a disaster. That decision taken ten years ago has hurt our economy, made it harder for us to control immigration, and divided our country in an unprecedented way.
With typical boldness, the Prime Minister made clear that all options are on the table in terms of our future relationship with the EU. Joining the customs union or the single market. Retaining the status quo. Or ‘going all the way’ and rejoining.
My personal view is that we should be looking towards as close a possible relationship with Europe – including if we can, rejoining. Brexit was a tragic mistake, but not an irreversible one. … See MoreSee Less

PM says he is looking at all options and ministers will examine ‘what is doable’ and the ‘pros and cons’When I last updated about my workload I mentioned that August was unusually busy this year as the Prime Minister unleashed a blizzard of initiatives – and prompted a lot of contact from constituents!
This continued through to September, with constituents particularly contacting me regarding the Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill, the visitor levy and the Clean Water Bill. I also received a unusually high volume of casework – with housing and HMRC issues particularly predominant.
As always please do get in touch if you have any thoughts or need a hand. … See MoreSee Less
Tackling the housing crisis has been a core priority for the Labour Government during its first two years in office: delivering record investment in social housing, strengthening renters' rights and introducing major planning reforms.
Labour Conference showed that housing remains high on the agenda. The Government announced new powers for councils, tougher measures against landlords who fail to repair homes, and a new Your First Home scheme to help first-time buyers without access to “the bank of mum and dad”.
I’m sure many constituents would have been delighted to hear the Prime Minister announce that the Leasehold Reform bill will be brought forward before Christmas, taking on the web of management companies who too often rip off leaseholders through unfair charges, poor repairs and excessive fees.
Leasehold is an unfair, outdated feudal system that has allowed too many people to be treated as cash cows in homes they have worked hard to buy. Labour's commitment to end leasehold and deliver a fairer system is long overdue. … See MoreSee Less
