With young people receiving their GCSE results tomorrow, it’s been reported that the number of them taking creative subjects such as music, art, and design and technology has dropped significantly. Thousands of schools across England have had to cut these subjects from the curriculum due to Government policy and funding cuts. This is problematic not only for the future of the UK’s creative industries – a vital sector of the British economy – but also has implications for young people’s mental health, as creativity has been demonstrated to improve mental wellbeing. I will continue to work with organisations such as the Musicians’ Union to encourage the Government to review its education policy to ensure the arts don’t disappear from the curriculum completely.
