Kerry McCarthy Labour MP for Bristol East
On Sunday, I was pleased to speak at a training course on Sanctuary in Politics for asylum seekers and refugees from the South West.
It was lovely to meet everyone, and to talk about how important it is for refugees and asylum seekers to engage with their MPs about the issues that are important to them. My casework team deals with hundreds of immigration cases a year, and from a policy perspective, I have recently been supporting Tulip Siddiq MP’s 10 Minute Rule Bill calling for an end to the indefinite detention of refugees and asylum seekers. I have also written to the Home Office numerous times to raise my constituents’ concerns about a wide range of issues relating to refugees and asylum seekers, including family reunification criteria, the future of refugees and asylum seekers post-Brexit, education schemes for refugees, and the detention of victims of torture.
Our country has a proud history of providing sanctuary and I am determined to do all I can to ensure this continues. Thanks to all those who came on Sunday.
