Kerry McCarthy Labour MP for Bristol East
Last night, I voted against the Prime Minister’s Brexit deal – and it turned out to be the largest defeat inflicted on a government for well over a century. As soon as the result of the vote was announced, Jeremy Corbyn tabled a vote of no confidence in the Government; this will be voted on this evening and, of course, I will be voting in support of the Labour motion, in the hope of triggering a General Election.
Should the vote of no confidence fail, then I believe the time has come – in line with Labour’s Conference policy – for the party to move to supporting a People’s Vote with an option to remain in the EU on the ballot paper. If Parliament cannot sort out this mess, then the people must have the final say.
