This week the climate emergency and ecological crisis we are facing was finally given the air time it deserves in Parliament and the media. On Tuesday I joined Greta Thunberg on her visit to London and listened to her powerful words about the absurdity of current climate policy across the world. Following the event, I contributed to the urgent question in the Commons on climate change and the protests by Extinction Rebellion. Once again I raised the environmental impact of the global food system – an issue I have almost singlehandedly led on in Parliament for the past 10 years. I also spoke in the Ministerial Statement that followed it later in the day, on the Government’s climate policy, proposing that Bristol should host COP26 and to ask what action the Government is taking to ensure our natural resources are used more wisely. To end the day, I co-signed Darren Jones MP‘s letter alongside 70 Labour colleagues requesting a full day of debate in the House of Commons as soon as possible on the Government’s plan to meet net zero carbon emissions. Since that letter, Labour has now tabled an Opposition Day debate next week on the declaration of a climate and environment emergency.
