Net zero agricultural emissions

Following the Committee on Climate Change (CCC) report launch which I attended earlier this month on the UK’s contribution to stopping global warming, I asked the Farming Minister at oral questions what steps the Government was taking to try and ensure net zero agricultural emissions. In several places the report points to reducing our red meat intake, and this isn’t surprising, given that if we replaced one red meat meal a week with a plant-based meal, it would cut our greenhouse gas emissions by some 50 million tonnes – the equivalent of taking a staggering 16 million cars off the road. In his reply, I was disappointed the Minister didn’t commit to any specific action, particularly as he recognised progress has stalled in recent years and that more needs to be done.
