This week I took part in the launch of a new initiative in Parliament, “People and Nature”, which is all about making sure that our overseas aid programme works with the environment in mind.

When I spoke at the event I welcomed this initiative – we can’t help people in the poorest countries unless we also protect the natural environment on which so many of them depend for their livelihoods, and unless we tackle climate change and pollution. I also made the point, however, that we need consistency across government: there is little point in DFID supporting renewable energy projects if the Department for International Trade and UKEF are still promoting fossil fuels.
