Health Question 23rd July

In Health questions yesterday I asked about support for people with autism or learning difficulties being held in mental health inpatient units, following up on concerns raised by the “Homes not Hospitals” campaign. The Minister replied that, as part of the NHS Long Term Plan, the Government has committed to significant investment in primary and community health services, including specialist services and community crisis care to reduce avoidable hospital admissions for autistic people and those with learning disabilities.I asked the Health Minister what proportion of that money will go towards ensuring that children with autism or learning disabilities – the number of whom being held in inappropriate hospital settings has more than doubled since 2015 – are able to receive care in their own homes. I am glad that the Minister recognises the importance of this issue, and the great benefits that early-intervention can have in ensuring that families don’t have to reach crisis point before getting the help they need.
