On the last sitting day of parliament before the summer recess, I contributed to an important debate on the Review of the Mental Health Act 1983, which desperately needs reform in order to be brought up to date with our more modern understanding of mental health. I spoke specifically about how the Act is being used inappropriately to detain people with learning disabilities or autism, including far too many children and young people, and called for more investment in local mental health services to prevent vulnerable people being kept in inpatient settings often very far from home. You can read my speech here.
