Special Educational Needs services for children needs additional funding

In Bristol, as in many other places, there has been a surge in demand for special needs services for young people. Children with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) can end up on waiting lists for unacceptable periods of time before they can access support. I know people have concerns about this, especially parents whose children are affected, a number of whom have been in touch. Bristol City Council is working hard to make improvements – it has dedicated additional resources to this, and is hiring new staff to help speed up the process. Funding, unfortunately, is a major concern and the Government needs to give Bristol City Council greater support. That’s why, in the first Treasury Questions of the new Parliament, I urged the Chancellor of the Exchequer to give Bristol City Council more funding for special needs provision.
