Kerry McCarthy Labour MP for Bristol East
Children of school age have been through a really tough time recently, with many missing out on months of schooling. So it’s very disappointing to hear that Broadlands Academy in Keynsham was turning away dozens of pupils for minor breaches in their school uniform code, such as not having polishable shoes. https://www.somersetlive.co.uk/news/broadlands-academy-uniform-too-militant-4495853
Some of my constituents have been affected by this draconian approach to uniform rules. I am offering them support, and am contacting the Academy to ask that they be more sympathetic to families’ circumstances.
The school is in Jacob Rees-Mogg MP’s constituency. I raised this issue in the Chamber during Business Questions last week, which would normally be answered by Mr Rees-Mogg as Leader of the House but unfortunately he couldn’t make it that day.
As I said in my question, I suspect he thinks all children should be dressed up as if they’re off to Eton every day (!), but I am hoping to be able to seek his views on this and that we can work together to convince the school to relax its uniform policy. Surely what is important is that children are educated, not whether they have a logo on their jumper or not?
