Four weeks ago, Belarusians took to the streets in their thousands to protest against Lukashenko’s fraudulent win in the rigged elections. Since then, there have been widespread reports of the Belarusian state arbitrary detaining protestors, carrying out summary beatings, and even torturing the detainees.
This is utterly abhorrent, and there needs to be repercussions for the Belarusian state, and those who support or profit from its undemocratic activities. I met with representatives of the Belarusian diaspora earlier today, who are yet to be offered a meeting to discuss the situation with the UK Foreign Office, despite first contacting them a month ago.
The EU is currently drawing up a list of Belarusian officials that would be subject to sanctions. I asked the Minister if the UK would commit to imposing the same sanctions as our European allies; you can see her response below.
