Thanks to Marley and Sangeetha for Eastville for arranging a virtual community meeting last night with residents in Beacon Tower, Fishponds, to discuss cladding and fire safety concerns, and to Cllrs Nicola Beech and Mhairi Threlfall for their contributions. Beacon Tower is above 18 metres and leaseholders should therefore be eligible for recently-announced Government help with the cost of removing cladding, but there are outstanding questions as to the scope and timing of support to which we are seeking answers.

Despite the Government’s repeated promises to protect leaseholders, some four years after the Grenfell tragedy many residents are still stuck in unsafe flats, which they are unable to sell. Those that are in buildings under 18 metres high will still have to foot the bill for the removal of unsafe cladding.

When the Fire Safety Bill comes back to Parliament next week, Labour colleagues and I will be pushing the Government to protect all leaseholders and end the cladding scandal. There are a number of amendments in the name of Keir Starmer/ Thangam Debbonaire, and we are also backing amendments from the Tory MPs, Stephen McPartland and Royston Smith.

There is also a citywide public meeting this Friday with Cllr Nicola Beech and Labour’s Shadow Secretary of State for Housing Thangam Debbonaire. All residents with concerns are welcome to attend – https://news.bristol.gov.uk/…/public-meeting-on-cladding-sc….
