By now you should have received a letter informing you that the census for England and Wales will be taking place on the 21st of March. Census data is used to inform decisions about funding and local services, and also reveals some fascinating information about the demographics of the population. This census will, for the first time,  include voluntary questions on sexuality and gender orientation. All personal information is of course protected. So it is very important that everyone fills it in accurately – failure to do so can lead to a fine of up to £1,000.

During the night of the 1911 census, suffragette campaigner Emily Wilding Davison hid overnight in the House of Commons so she could list it as her address and stake her claim to the same political rights as men. Former Bristol MP Tony Benn illegally installed this plaque in the cupboard in which she hid to commemorate the event 80 years later.
