Despite its 2019 manifesto pledge, the Government has continually refused to set out how it will protect environmental and animal welfare standards in post-Brexit trade deals. The National Food Strategy – commissioned by Michael Gove when he was Environment Secretary and published this week – is now calling for urgent clarity on this.
I asked the Minister about this at International Trade Questions this week, but he was unable to explain which standards would be protected, or by what mechanism they would be defended.
The Government wants us to simply take their word for it when it comes to our food standards. That simply isn’t good enough – we need a firm commitment in law to protect us against seeing our supermarket shelves filled with cheap imported food that’s produced in ways which would be illegal here.
