This week I spoke in a Westminster Hall debate on the disgusting levels of sewage pollution in our rivers, after massive public outrage over the Government’s attempts to water down protections that the Lords had put into the Environment Bill.

Locally we’ve heard of multiple cases of sickness amongst swimmers at popular wild swimming spots like Conham River Park and Warleigh Weir, linked to sewage overflows.

As part of my speech, I mentioned The Bristol Cable’s excellent investigation into sewage dumping in popular spots along the Avon, which is a must read.

I was clear that the Government and Wessex Water have a responsibility to our natural environment and to local people. They urgently need to start cleaning up their act.
