Last week, I was contacted by a self-employed constituent who had to close her childminding business due to a positive Covid-19 test result in her household. Her experiences drew attention to the glaring discrepancies between the Government’s criteria for temporary business closure, and eligibility for support payments. As she wasn’t told to self-isolate, she didn’t qualify, and lost a week’s income.
I expect that this frustrating experience is all too common among childminders, as well as many other self-employed business owners across Bristol East. I’ve now written to the Chancellor to urge him to close this gap in support for people like my constituent, and ensure that they don’t lose out for acting responsibly to stop the spread of Covid-19.
