This week, I asked the new Minister for ‘Brexit Opportunities’ whether we would see the Government finally act on expert recommendations in the National Food Strategy and ensure that food procured by the Government is always healthy and sustainable.

The Government spends £2bn on food procurement every year, for example, in schools, hospitals, prisons, and care homes, but right now there are loopholes that allow cheap, poor-quality food to be purchased over healthy, climate-friendly alternatives.

We’ve recently seen reports that Jacob Rees-Mogg is happy to stick his neck out to oppose a ban on foie gras imports, so I also asked him if he will at least confirm that taxpayer money won’t be spent on supporting his own food preferences!
