This week in Parliament I asked about animal welfare abuses on supposedly ‘high welfare’ Red Tractor certified farms.

This comes after Panorama’s ‘A Cow’s Life’ revealed the horror of industrial dairy farming, including on farms that are Red Tractor certified.
There have been so many undercover investigations that have revealed the way animals are really treated on these farms. This includes animals being subject to horrific violence, forced to live in unsanitary conditions, dying from thirst and even resorting to cannibalism from hunger. With these revelations, the public could be forgiven for assuming the Red Tractor label is worthless.

I asked the Minister what she would do to restore consumer confidence and ensure higher welfare standards are met, but she avoided talking about Red Tractor and instead spoke about how vets would be sent in to inspect farms once a year. I doubt this will do anything to improve the situation.
