Like so many of my constituents who have got in touch in recent days, I was appalled by the Government’s announcement that it wants to ship people seeking asylum to Rwanda. It’s disgraceful that the Government is willing to deport those fleeing conflict, war and persecution – which could include victims of modern slavery and people trafficking, or those coming from Ukraine – to a country some 4,000 miles away.

This is a shameful attempt by the Government to try to distract from the Prime Minister’s law-breaking. It won’t resolve the problem of the small boats crossing the Channel and, as well as showing a shameful lack of compassion, it’s also a huge waste of public money.

I have written to the Home Secretary to urge her to reconsider.
