Kerry McCarthy Labour MP for Bristol East
For this month’s Fishponds Voice column, I have written about the need for urgent action on rising energy bills, which have already soared by £700 and are expected to rise further in October.
It is shocking that millions of people are now in the position of choosing between eating or heating their homes. The silence from the Government on this has been deafening.
The Chancellor has repeatedly refused to take the action that households up and down the country desperately need, but Labour has a plan that would help households immediately. We would impose a windfall tax on record oil and gas profits and use this revenue to provide up to £600 off energy bills for households. I will keep arguing for the Government to adopt that plan before the cost of living crisis worsens even further.
