Kerry McCarthy Labour MP for Bristol East
The Russian invasion of Ukraine has exposed the vulnerability of the UK to shocks in the global food system, as key ports in Ukraine have been either destroyed or blocked by Russian aggression.
The UK imports up to 46% of our food, and the dangers of this are now clear, with rising prices and food shortages.
Yet despite this, the Government is now – shockingly – rumoured to be abandoning many of the recommendations in the National Food Strategy, which would help us improve food security by moving to a more sustainable food and farming system. I asked the Minister today if he would confirm these rumours, but he avoided the question.
Every week it becomes clearer how little vision and ambition this Government has in addressing the defining challenges of our time. Labour will keep pushing Ministers to stick to their promises and to do better on the issues that matter.
