This week in Parliament, I asked Ministers about the brutal murders of British journalist Dom Phillips and indigenous rights activist Bruno Pereira in Brazil.

Dom and Bruno had journeyed into the Amazon to report on the environmental destruction taking place as the forest is illegally torn down so the land can be developed. They are the latest victims of a constant assault against the rainforest and the indigenous groups that live there – which saw 182 indigenous people and 20 environmental activists murdered in 2020 (the most recent year for which I’ve seen figures).

The Government needs to do all it can to achieve justice for Dom and Bruno, but that goes beyond just finding their killers. We need to end the environmental destruction that they were there to expose. That means pressuring the Bolsonaro Government at every opportunity and acting at home to stamp out deforestation in our food supply chains.
