Recently I asked the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs about the destruction of the Brazilian Amazon, something that British journalist Dom Phillips and indigenous rights activist Bruno Pereira were working to expose when they were brutally murdered.

Tragically this violence against environmental activists is now common in Brazil, and is driven by the desire to tear down the rainforest in order to develop the land – mostly to raise cattle and grow soya for livestock feed. People often don’t realise when they’re buying chicken, for example, that it will be linked to deforestation in this way.

By allowing such imports the UK is complicit in that deforestation. I will continue to press the Government to finally act and stamp out all deforestation-linked goods from UK supply chains.
