This week I announced that I have just been appointed Labour’s Shadow Minister for Climate Change, working in Ed Miliband‘s Climate Change and Net Zero team. I’m really excited to be taking on this role and to be playing a part in developing and explaining Labour’s policies, including our £28bn a year Climate Investment Pledge.
This is a crucial time for tackling the climate emergency and for challenging the Government over its lack of action and ambition.
Today the independent Climate Change Committee (CCC) released a devastating report that made clear the Government is failing to meet its own legally-binding net zero by 2050 target. The report described “major policy failures” and “scant evidence of delivery”, and the CCC expressed concern that the Government might renege on the 2050 target altogether. The Government has only come up with credible plans to cut 39% of emissions and is way off track in other respects, particularly in tackling emissions from buildings, agriculture/ land use and waste.
This report is particularly damning given that the UK currently holds the COP presidency and is meant to be setting an example to the rest of the world. Labour will be doing all we can to urge the Government to act faster and to do more.
