Earlier this week, at the height of the brutal heatwave, I asked why the Government had failed to act on recommendations from the Environmental Audit Committee to get green infrastructure in place that would allow urban areas to cope better in sweltering heat. I also asked whether there were now plans to push forward with this.

The Secretary of State’s response? That it’s not his ‘responsibility’.

This week has made clear just how unprepared we are for the effects of our changing climate. We simply do not have time for Ministers to keep passing the buck on this issue, rather than getting on and doing something about it.
