When I spoke to ITV News West Country yesterday morning there was only one question that everyone was asking: how can Liz Truss possibly continue?

She is in office but not in power. Having lost all authority, it is now Jeremy Hunt, the grim reaper of austerity, who dominates the airwaves, ready to unleash another round of devastating public service cuts. The Tories are gripped by the fear of a General Election, acting in the interests of the Conservative Party rather than those of the country.

Later in the day Truss failed to turn up in the Chamber to face questions over the sacking of the Chancellor she installed and championed. (That was Kwasi Kwarteng for those who’ve forgotten him already). We were reassured that she was absolutely not hiding under a desk…

As Keir Starmer asked – “How can Britain get the stability it needs when all the Government offers is grotesque chaos? How can Britain get the stability it needs when instead of leadership we have this utter vacuum? When the PM has no mandate from her party and no mandate from the country?”
