Kerry McCarthy Labour MP for Bristol East
Today in Parliament I asked about the lack of progress on agreements made at last year’s COP26 climate summit.
This includes being way off track on the pledge to end deforestation by 2030, and the UK failing to pay the $300m into the Green Climate Fund and the Adaptation Fund it promised in Glasgow last November.
I would have put my question to the COP26 President, Alok Sharma, but he’s been sacked by Rishi Sunak, just days before COP27 starts.
The UK has the COP Presidency; we’re meant to be showing leadership. But how can the UK be trusted on the world stage when we have not delivered on our own climate promises?
Whether it’s drilling for more oil and gas, failing to support climate-vulnerable countries, sacking climate envoys or Sunak having to be dragged kicking and screaming to attend COP27, it’s clear this Government simply doesn’t care about climate change.
