At Levelling-Up Questions yesterday MPs from across the House asked about funding for local government. I was frustrated to hear the Minister for Local Government talk blithely about the need for efficiency savings and for council taxpayers to bear some of the burden of repairing the economic damage caused by Kwasi Kwarteng’s mini-budget.

9 out of 10 councils will be facing a funding shortfall next year. Bristol City Council faces a £87.6m funding gap over the next five years. I invited him to come to Bristol to see for himself the effect that cuts will have on essential services, and to hear from constituents about how they feel about council tax rises during a cost-of-living crisis.
