Last night I called on the Government to abolish the non-dom tax loophole. Labour would use the money raised to fund more doctors and nurses, and guarantee breakfast clubs for every primary school child. You’d think there’d be consensus that if you make your home here, you should pay your taxes here… but nevertheless the Government voted against us.

Non-dom status means that more than £3billion has been lost in revenue for the UK. We have to ask ourselves whether we want to live in a country where it is easier to avoid paying your taxes than it is to see your GP. The tax is outdated and representative of a system rigged against working people.

This is about transparency and fairness. As I say in my speech “A common refrain throughout the pandemic was ‘we’re all in this together’. Well, the fact is we’re not. And we really should be.”
