Kerry McCarthy Labour MP for Bristol East
I was glad to be able to speak in Monday’s debate on ending the UK fur trade. It is an abhorrent and unnecessary industry which causes a huge amount of suffering for the animals involved. I’ve seen videos of supposedly ‘ethical’ fur farms in Finland where foxes have been purposefully bred and overfed to have huge folds of excess skin – causing deformed legs, breathing problems and even DNA damage.
Fur farms were banned in the UK in 2000 on the grounds of public morality, so why do we continue to support the industry abroad by allowing imports of fur products into the UK? The sooner fur is banned the better.
