On Tuesday, I attended the annual wreath-laying ceremony at Westminster Abbey for Tibetan victims of torture. This year’s ceremony took on a particular significance because this week marks the 60th anniversary of the Tibetan uprising against Chinese rule which began in Tibet’s capital city, Lhasa, on 10th March 1959. It led to a violent crackdown on Tibetans, and the exile of the young Dalai Lama.

Tibet has been an issue close to my heart for many years, and I’ve campaigned alongside groups like the Tibet Society for an end to China’s illegal occupation of Tibet, and for the freedom of the Tibetan people, as well as their right to self-determination. I was lucky enough to meet with the Tibetan Parliament-in-Exile last year in India, with a cross-party group of MPs from the Commons.
