This morning the Government issued a disappointing response to the Environmental Audit Committee’s report on ending the era of throwaway fashion. In spite of the evidence our committee put forward about garment workers in this country being criminally underpaid and the environmental cost of the fast fashion business model, with 300,000 tonnes of clothes sent to landfill or incinerated each year, the Government has decided to reject all of our recommendations. Instead, they’ve opted to support voluntary measures, that retailers show no signs of engaging with, that won’t fix the problem.
