Kerry McCarthy Labour MP for Bristol East

This morning in Westminster Hall MPs debated a recent report highlighting human rights abuses in Tibet. China is running a coercive, military-style training regime in Tibet, which aims to erode Tibetan culture, religion, and language, with 500,000 Tibetans being put into ‘re-education camps’.
Tibet has a long, proud history as an independent nation, and its own distinct culture, yet China is hellbent on cultural assimilation.
These labour camps are just another chapter in China’s brutal history in Tibet. China wants control over Tibet’s abundant natural resources, such as the rapidly melting ‘third pole’ – the largest ice storage outside of the North and South poles – which I mentioned later in this speech.

Update 10/10/2020: I’ve just received this rather nice letter (see below) from the Dalai Lama’s representative for Northern Europe, Poland, and the Baltic states.
China’s actions in Tibet don’t get the level of attention it deserves, and I am always happy to draw attention to this important issue when I’m given the opportunity.
