Following Thursday’s elections, I’d like to offer a huge congratulations to my friend Marvin Rees, Mayor of Bristol. He’s offered the leadership Bristol needs during the most challenging of circumstances, and it’s great news that he’s been given another three years.

Equally, I’m delighted with a Labour Gain for Dan Norris, our new Mayor for the West of England Combined Authority (covering Bristol, BANES, and South Gloucestershire). The previous Tory mayor had been completely invisible, meaning many people didn’t know this role even existed. I’m sure as a former local MP, Dan will be able to hit the ground running and deliver on the region’s strategic priorities for transport, housing and jobs.

Congratulations too to all the councillors elected in Bristol East. I was delighted that all Labour incumbents standing for re-election were successful, which is a testament to their hard work. Asher Craig, Nicola Beech, Steve Pearce and Fabian Breckels in St George, Craig Cheney in Hillfields and Tim Rippington in Brislington East will be joined by new Labour councillors, Amal Ali in Frome Vale, Marley Bennett in Eastville, Ellie King in Hillfields, and Katja Hornchen in Brislington East.

No matter what party our new councillors are from, I hope we can work constructively together over the next three years to improve our local communities, protect local services, and help local people.
