Today, as we mark World Ocean Day, I’m backing WWF’s call for an Ocean Recovery Strategy to restore the health of our seas by 2030, and for this to be introduced before the UK hosts the UN climate summit, COP26, later this year. I’ve signed up to become an #OceanHero and can be seen here enjoying a vegan ice-cream from the solar-powered WWF ice-cream van outside Parliament.
Our seas are a haven of biodiversity, and an unrivalled store of carbon; protecting them is essential if we are to achieve the goal of net-zero emissions. The Government needs to do more to conserve one of our most important national assets – if our seas are actively restored, it could not only help us meet our climate goals, it could bring huge benefits of over £30bn into the economy too.
