This week, as Labour’s Shadow Minister for Green Transport, I asked the Transport Secretary to do more to keep and create high-skilled green jobs in electric vehicle manufacturing in Britain, given growing concern over British firms losing out on these opportunities, and jobs and production moving abroad.

Vehicle factories like Ford’s Halewood site and GKN, the component makers in Birmingham, are desperately in need of support in order to transition to manufacturing green vehicles, but the Government isn’t backing them.

In his response to me the Transport Secretary bragged about the UK’s high sales of electric vehicles, but only last week a report warned that the UK could go from producing half of Europe’s electric vehicles in 2018 to only 4% by 2030 without urgent Government action: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-57490100
