At the start of the tournament the Home Secretary Priti Patel criticised the England team for taking the knee, labelling the move “gesture politics” and refusing to condemn the small minority of “fans” who booed the players. England and Aston Villa defender Tyrone Mings is completely right to call her out for her hypocrisy, now she is claiming to support players who have been subject to racist abuse following England’s loss to Italy.

Mings, who started his career with Yate Town, experienced racial abuse during his England debut in Bulgaria and has supported the taking of the knee as a statement against racism. With this, Rashford’s campaigning on food poverty, Sterling’s help for the people of Grenfell, and Henderson’s support of the LGBT Rainbow laces campaign, this England squad has given us so many reasons to be proud of them.
