Kerry McCarthy Labour MP for Bristol East
Climate experts are clear that if we are going to achieve net zero emissions then new fossil fuel projects like the Cumbrian coal mine and Cambo oil field have to be stopped. This week I asked if the Government agreed with those experts, and if it would use its powers to oppose these polluting projects.
The Minister refused to do so, claiming that the emissions from these projects are already accounted for in the Government’s climate targets. But we’re not currently on track to meet those targets! Any new fossil fuel exploitation makes it even less likely we will reach net zero by 2050. As the experts say, we need to leave it in the ground.
