It was good to join PETA UK for their reception in Parliament this week. PETA are campaigning for the Queen’s Guards, who currently wear bearskin caps, to switch to cruelty-free alternatives. This campaign has my full support, but the Ministry of Defence won’t make this switch.
It is deeply disappointing that the Government will not recognise the unnecessary cruelty of the fur trade and are explicitly endorsing it by purchasing these furs. PETA have even identified a cruelty-free alternative and tested it to ensure it meets Ministry of Defence standards, but the Government is refusing to budge.
Unfortunately this is not surprising given the Government is reportedly ditching its pledge to ban cruel fur imports. We await confirmation of this but if the Government wanted to demonstrate its opposition to the cruelty of the fur trade now, it could start by ordering some new caps!
