Whether you love or hate them, we can all agree that riding an electric scooter on the pavement is completely unacceptable. It puts pedestrians at risk and can be very frightening, particularly for people with mobility issues or people who are visually impaired. We’ve see too many collisions, injuries and near misses.

I fear the Government’s proposals to legalise private e-scooters will only make this worse, so at Home Office Questions this week I asked for assurances that the police would get the powers and resources they need to tackle pavement riding. I’m disappointed that the Home Office Minister responding – who used to cover e-scooters when she was in the Transport Team and I shadowed her and should know the area well – said the current guidance is clear as it’s obvious that this problem is not going away. We need to see action on this before more people are seriously hurt.
