I joined the #HungryForAction campaign in Parliament Square this week to highlight the famine in East Africa, which has enveloped the region. A fifth season without rain, this is now the worst food crisis of the 21st century.

I signed a cross-party letter to Government over the summer calling for urgent funding and international humanitarian support, but the crisis has only worsened since. Oxfam suggest that someone will die of hunger every 36 seconds between now and the end of the year in Somalia, Somaliland, Ethiopia, Kenya and South Sudan.

I know there will be plenty of people in Bristol East who have relatives and friends in the areas affected. On their behalf, and for all the people of the Horn of Africa, it’s imperative that the UK Government provides more emergency funding.
