Kerry McCarthy Labour MP for Bristol East
I spoke in an Urgent Question on Monday after it was reported that over 200 barrels of oil had leaked from a pipeline in Poole Harbour, Dorset. As I say in the clip ‘we need to learn lessons when incidents like this happen’, because it’s clear this Government has failed to do so. There have been 721 North Sea oil spills in the last 3 years alone!
The Government’s obsession with fossil fuels means it’s likely to grant approval soon for Rosebank oil and gas field, a site in the North Sea which includes a ecologically-important Marine Protected Area.
Aside from prolonging our dependence on climate-wrecking emissions, it’s also estimated that the UK Government would make a net loss of more than £100 million over the lifetime of the field. Rosebank represents both a terrible deal for the British public and a terrible deal for the planet.
A Labour Government would rule out any new oil and gas licences as part of our green sprint for cheap, clean renewable energy.
