Thank you to everyone who turned out for my campaign launch over the weekend – I’m proud to be standing again as Labour’s Candidate for Bristol East, a seat I’ve had the privilege of representing since 2005.
It was exciting to see people so full of enthusiasm and optimism, as we look ahead to the General Election on Thursday 4th July. Across the country people have a choice: chaos with the Conservatives, or change with Labour. This is nowhere more clear than in the Parliamentary work I’ve done as Shadow Minister for Climate Change, faced with a Government which has sacrificed climate consensus for culture war, and prioritised the profits of oil and gas giants over the prosperity of British families. But change is on the way.
Labour will cut energy bills for good, deliver the biggest investment in home-grown clean energy in British history, restore nature, protect our public services, build affordable housing, put money back in people’s pockets with a growing economy, and once again ensure Government is in the service of the Britain people.
You can read more about the first six steps that Keir Starmer has set out for Government below:
1. 𝐃𝐞𝐥𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫 𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐨𝐦𝐢𝐜 𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 with tough spending rules, so we can grow our economy and keep taxes, inflation and mortgages as low as possible.
2. 𝐂𝐮𝐭 𝐍𝐇𝐒 𝐰𝐚𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐞𝐬 with 40,000 more evening and weekend appointments each week, paid for by cracking down on tax avoidance and non-doms.
3. 𝐋𝐚𝐮𝐧𝐜𝐡 𝐚 𝐧𝐞𝐰 𝐁𝐨𝐫𝐝𝐞𝐫 𝐒𝐞𝐜𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐝 with hundreds of new specialist investigators and counter-terror powers to smash criminal gangs and strengthen our borders.
4. 𝐒𝐞𝐭 𝐮𝐩 𝐆𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭 𝐁𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐬𝐡 𝐄𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐠𝐲, a publicly-owned clean power company, to cut bills for good and boost energy security, paid for by a windfall tax on oil and gas giants.
5. 𝐂𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐤 𝐝𝐨𝐰𝐧 𝐨𝐧 𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐬𝐨𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐛𝐞𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐢𝐨𝐮𝐫,, with more neighbourhood police paid for by ending wasteful contracts, tough new penalties for offenders, and a new network of youth hubs.
6. 𝐑𝐞𝐜𝐫𝐮𝐢𝐭 𝟔,𝟓𝟎𝟎 𝐧𝐞𝐰 𝐭𝐞𝐚𝐜𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐬 in key subjects to set children up for life, work and the future, paid for by ending tax breaks for private schools
